BestChoice Privacy Statement

BestChoice is an interactive learning website hosted by Azure Web Services to assist school and university students to engage with and learn about chemistry. BestChoice is owned by BestChoice Learning Limited, a company registered in New Zealand. We need to collect a small amount of personal information about our users to operate BestChoice, and we're committed to processing this information with care and respect.


The company is the data controller and determines the purposes for, and ways in which, we collect and use personal information.



Information we collect


We only collect the personal information we need to operate the site. We collect this information from you when you provide it to us (for example when you create an account) and when you use the site (for example by entering answers and completing courses).


The personal information we collect about you includes:


  • email address (voluntary - this is used for resetting passwords and responding to comments);
  • full name (voluntary - this will help your teacher to support you);
  • IP address;
  • general site usage, including page visits and user location;
  • cookies (more on this below);
  • courses used;
  • participation (answers chosen) in courses, and
  • user results.

Cookies are small text files sent to your browser from our web server, stored on your computer, and sent back to us each time your browser requests a page from our server. You can disable cookies in your web browser but the site will not operate well if you do.


Please note, we use PayPal to process our payments, which means we don't need to collect or retain any financial information about our users or licence holders.



How we use and share information


We process the personal information we collect for the purposes of operating the site and providing the services you have requested from us (performing our side of the contract), improving site functionality and the services offered, and communicating with our users (meeting our legitimate business interests).


In particular, we use your personal information to:


  • set up your user account and manage access to that account;
  • identify and support users as they participate in courses;
  • communicate with users about other services or courses available on the site (you can opt out of this);
  • administer the site and provide the personalised services requested;
  • conduct market research and analyse site usage, and
  • generally improve the site and the services offered.


Automated processing


We use Google Analytics to monitor and report on the use of site, but we don't share any identifiable personal information about you with Google for this purpose.


In order to meet the purposes and uses set out above, we may need to share your personal information with:


  • your teachers or the person or agency which paid for your user licence, and
  • our staff responsible for administering the site.


How we store and protect information


We store your personal information on a secure SQL server hosted by Azure Web Services in Australia. The Microsoft Azure platform delivers an enterprise-level cloud and has industry-leading approaches to data security. All data is stored securely within an isolated network and database infrastructure. In accordance with EU GDPR requirements, Microsoft Azure complies with both the EU-US privacy shield and EU Model Clauses.


No identifiable user information is published to the wider world wide web.


We retain your personal information for the duration of your participation in courses and a further five years after your last login, to ensure that you can view your previous usage for a reasonable period of time. Once this retention period has passed, we digitally erase your information.



How to exercise your privacy rights


You have the right to access and correct your personal information, and in some cases to delete it or object to the ways we're using it. You can always opt out of receiving marketing communications from us. You can also remove your account yourself on the profile page.
