The maximum number of electrons in the s, p and d subshells are shown below. These correspond to the number of columns in the three blocks of the periodic table shown.

s-Block elements are have their outermost electron in an s-subshell.   p-block elements have their outermost electron in a p subshell. The last electron added for a d-block element is in a d-subshell.
