The chemistry of the Group 1, 2 and elements and their compounds depends largely on the position these elements in the periodic table. The includes both the Group number and the position of that element within the group.
The best way to familiarise yourself with the position of a particular element in the periodic table is to use this information to answer questions. On completion of the module you should be able, for Group 1, 2 and elements,
- to identify the group in which a particular element is found
- to identify both the position in the group for a given element and the element in a given position in the group
- to identify the common oxidation state for a given group of elements
- to identify the oxidation state for a given element
