Main Group elements - elements in Groups 1, 2, 13-18
Transition metals - elements in Groups 4-12
The properties of elements in some Main groups are so similar that some Main groups are referred to by a name as well as the group number.
Group 18 elements are all non-reactive gases and are referred to as
Noble Gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe).
Group 17 elements are referred to as
Halogens (F, Cl, Br and I).
Group 1 elements are referred to as
Alkali Metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs).
Group 2 elements are referred to as
Alkaline Earths (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba).
