Learning objectives

This  module is concerned with calculations involving enthalpy (energy) changes for reactions such as the example below.
 
2CH3CH3(g) + 7O2(g) 
 6H2O(l) + 4CO2(g)

ΔrH = –3114 kJ mol–1

On completion of the module you should be able to use reaction enthalpies (ΔrH - enthalpy change per mol of reaction)
 
  • to calculate the amount or mass of substance that produces a specified enthalpy change (ΔH)
     
  • to calculate the enthalpy change (ΔHresulting from reaction of a specified mass or amount of substance
