This module is concerned with predicting the shape of a molecule in which two or more atoms are bonded to a central atom from the formula of the compound.
Examples are restricted to those
- with no more than four electron pair domains at the central atom.
- which have hydrogen or halogen as the outer atoms
.
On completion of the module you should be able to
- draw the the Lewis structure of a molecule of type EXn and use this to predict the shape of the molecule
- predict the shape from the given compositon of the molecule if the number of non-bonding electron pairs at the central atom is also given
- predict X-E-X bond angles based on the shape and the orientation of electron pair domains at the central atom.
