Learning objectives

This module is concerned with calculations using data from titration of iron(II) salts with potassium permanganate in acidic solution.

MnO4(aq) + 5Fe2+(aq) + 8H+(aq)  Mn2+(aq) + 5Fe3+(aq) + 4H2O

The examples involve calculating

  • concentration.

  • mass

  • % by mass

On completion of the module you should be able to

  • construct a plan for calculating the quantities above from a given exact volume and exact concentration of either iron(II) or permanganate ion

  • use an exact volume and concentration of iron(II) to calculate the concentration of a permanganate solution

  • use an exact volume and concentration of permanganate solution to calculate either a mass or a percentage by mass of iron in a sample

  • report the most accurate final answer from the given data (without early rounding)

  • report the final answer to the appropriate number of significant figures
