This part of the scheme features the positive oxidation states of chlorine. Compounds containing positive oxidation states of chlorine may be prepared by
- Reaction with fluorine which in this case gives an interhalogen containing Cl(+5) and F(-1). ClF and ClF3 also exist. All contain F(-1). The compound ClF7 is not yet known. Presumably this compound is less stable because a chlorine atom is too small to fit seven fluorines around it.
- Autooxidation-reduction reactions in OH–(aq) at room temperature or upon heating. As Cl2 is in an intermediate oxidation state (0) it can act as an oxidant or a reductant giving products containing chlorine in a positive oxidation state (see above) and Cl–.
